Some things just never lose their appeal...and Crusader is one of them.

I just got an external disc drive so I can (hopefully) play again. Year ago, when I did using Dosbox, the audio was not available, nor the live action cutscenes. Fingers crossed that I can at least SEE, if not hear. I'll never forget how much fun I had :)

Glad to see you're back! It's been a long time.

I oughta play the games again at some point.

The GOG versions make it super simple to play Crusader on modern systems.

Unfortunately, my bank does not like me doing transactions out of the country :-(

Unless I am able to just download GOG and then install off the disc - which, of course, I still have :)

Follow these instructions to be able to play without a CD: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Crusader:_No_Remorse

Also I recommend DosBox-Staging, a fork of dosbox that comes with a pretty neat CRT filter and some other improvements, it's my favorite way to play the game.

The ScummVM port is nice too

  1. Copy folders FLICS and IDATA to the installation folder then copy any files from folders STATIC and SOUND that are missing from their installation folder counterparts to said counterparts.
  2. Edit CRUSADER.CFG line cdletter to letter of installation drive. Also edit flicpath to reflect the game's install directory (for example, \crusader\flics), to make cutscenes play.

Do NOT change installation types in install after doing the above or it will damage the installation. If you damaged the installation you can fix it by copying the SHAPES.FLX file off your CD and placing it in the STATIC folder in your installation. Then edit CRUSADER.CFG and add the line fullinstall=true; if it already exists then just ensure it equals true. You can also delete the DL.DAT file in the STATIC folder as it's junk made by the install type change process.

Thing is, I DO have the CD, but am unable to get it to run. I cannot use GOG, as my bank doesn't allow out-of-country charges.
I will see what's up with DosBox-Staging...wish me luck!

Thank you for the info, Maddo :)

I'm using these config to run it with dosbox-staging, I have placed dosbox in a subfolder called DOSBOX-S, put both config files and the shortcut in the crusader installation folder then change the paths in the shortcut to your paths and maybe it will launch, tweak settings in the configs as needed

Same here. The out-of-the-box configuration for Staging is basically perfect for Crusader.
